WCF Launches Campaign for Gender Equality in Public Office at Parties of Your Choice Gala 2010

Washington, D.C. – Continuing its tradition of celebrating women in politics, the Women’s Campaign Forum, formerly Women’s Campaign Fund (WCF), will hold its 30th Annual Parties of Your Choice Gala on March 11, 2010 in New York City.

A Manhattan tradition, WCF’s Parties of Your Choice Gala brings together luminaries from the fields of media, fashion, business, publishing and politics for a celebrity-chef prepared dinner in some of the finest New York City homes.

WCF President/CEO Sam Bennett writes about the Gala and why everyone needs more women in government on the Huffington Post.

This year, the Gala will commence with a heightened sense of urgency: The immediate need to increase women’s political participation. The Gala will kick off at Christie’s Auction House at 6:00pm with a cocktail reception, where WCF will launch its National Awareness Campaign, “Who Needs More Women in Government? Everyone.”

The message will be delivered via dramatic performance piece, written by and starring a broad array of female leaders, including former CEO Christie Hefner, WNBA President Donna Orender, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth “Liz” Shuler, and Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner.

This won’t just be your average play—these women will deliver their lines while standing on ladders in the center of Christie’s.
WCF is taking this theatrical approach to disturb the complacency of the nation about women’s unequal representation in government. At a time of incredible political and economic unrest in America, this Gala and performance will bring together people from a wide spectrum of backgrounds, fields, and even political affiliations, all for the sole purpose of increasing women’s national leadership.

While Washington fights over filibusters and remains in a stalemate, women are organizing, motivating, and acting—much like they do in elected office. Studies continue to show that women sponsor more legislation, bring home more revenue for their districts, and foster greater collaboration as legislators.

With the American people declaring our government ‘broken’ and Congress remaining in deadlock, WCF believes the cause and solution to the problem is women. Holding only 17% of the seats in Congress, women’s inequality halts progress and damages our country. This year’s Parties of Your Choice Gala will be focused on the critical need to fix that statistic starting this November.

Special Guests at this year’s Gala include: ABC’S The View co-host Sherri Shepherd, Emmy Award-Winning 60 Minutes Executive Editor Philip Scheffler, fashion designers Charles Nolan and Vivienne Tam, Marie Claire Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles, author/blogger Jane Hamsher of FireDogLake, Momzillas author Jill Kargman, NFL Executive Vice President Jeff Pash, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), New York Times photographer Chester Higgins Jr., Feminist Majority Foundation President Eleanor Smeal, Tony-Nominated Actress Barbara Walsh, Alexander Chaplin, Progressive Majority President Gloria Totten, Rep. Betsy Markey (CO-4), Harper's Magazine President & Publisher John “Rick” MacArthur, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth “Liz” Shuler, NY Q104.3-FM Rock DJ Ken Dashow, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (NY-08), District Attorney Kathleen Rice (Nassau County, NY), and Former New York Times & CBS Correspondent David Andelman.

Following the reception, Gala attendees will proceed to their selected dinner party. Guests have a choice of 13 different dinner parties around the city, all catered by some of New York’s best chefs, including Nobu Fifty Seven, Zarela Martinez of Zarela Restaurant, Brad Steelman of The River Cafe, and Antonio Settepani of Settepani.

In addition to the large list of Special Guests, the Gala will also feature some of WCF’s 2010 endorsed candidates from across the country. WCF will also honor Wendy Mackenzie, Ambassador Swanee Hunt, and Barbara Lee for their exemplary dedication to increasing women’s political representation.

WCF, founded in 1974, is the only non-partisan political venture capitalist organization supporting women leaders at all levels of office, during the earliest stages of their public life. WCF is dedicated to advancing the political participation and leadership of women who support reproductive health choices for all.

  • ★ 50/50 Representation

Why should good government depend on only half of the nation’s human capital? WCF commits to 50/50 representation of women and men in elected office by 2028.

  • ★ Common Ground

Common ground just means problems get solved more collaboratively, for the good of more people. It’s the bedrock of our leadership at home and abroad.

  • ★ Viability for Election

It takes more than money to make a candidate worth electing. WCF looks for guts, street sense, situational awareness, resilience -- the full range of gifts a woman brings to the race.

  • ★ Non-Partisan

A woman’s place is in every party, every elected office, at every level. Period.
