WCF President/CEO Sam Bennett Details Success of National Draft for Pro-Choice Women Candidates; Over 200 Candidates Found

(WASHINGTON, DC) – In the wake of a widespread war against women, Sam Bennett, President/CEO of the Women’s Campaign Forum (WCF), issued an urgent week-long national draft for women candidates who support reproductive choices and options. Launched on Monday, March 23rd, the draft identified over 200 pro-choice women candidates representing all 50 states and both sides of the aisle.

“Within the course of one week, women’s constitutionally-guaranteed rights in Texas, Oklahoma, and all across our country have been overturned,” Sam Bennett explained. “Here at WCF, we know the key to protecting women’s rights and health is to have pro-choice women serve in public office. Given these intrusive, far-reaching, and dangerous attacks on women, WCF has decided to return to our roots and empower the women on the ground who are running for office. These are the people who will be most impacted by these harmful attacks on women’s health. However, WCF recognizes they are also the people who have the most power to fight back and stand up for reproductive choices and options.”

Currently, women comprise only 17% of the United States Congress and 23% of state legislatures nation-wide. Reflecting on women’s severe underrepresentation in government, Sam reiterated the need to identify and support more pro-choice women running for office. “Finding 200 candidates in just one week is a significant accomplishment. But given what we’re up against, it is not nearly enough. There is much more work to be done to achieve women’s equality in government and stop these outrageous attacks on women’s rights and health. WCF is proud to be leading the charge to empower pro-choice women at every level of government and in every state.”

The Women’s Campaign Forum is the country’s only national, non-partisan organization dedicated to advancing the political participation and leadership of women who support reproductive health choices for all.
