Extreme Makeover: GOP Edition!

Weekly Brief: December 4, 2013
Brought to you by Women's Campaign Fund

What’s Scarier Than Shaming Women?
If Politico writer Michelle Cottle really thinks Michelle Obama is a “feminist nightmare,” then Cottle needs a serious wake up call. Good thing plenty of outspoken feminists have called Cottle out on shaming Obama for focusing more on her children than on politics.

Texas’ Top Ticket
I’m totally fangirling over Texas state Senator/resident badass Leticia Van de Putte, who recently announced that she’ll run for lieutenant governor alongside Wendy Davis! You don’t know how badly I want to see this all-women power duo take over Texas’ top offices. (Or, if you do, give their campaign a little love!)

Pretty Ugly
Here’s your UGH-inducing news of the week: Believe it or not, women across the U.S. are being fired because they’re “too attractive.”

Hobby Lobby Lobbies
Arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby is attempting to deny women employees birth control coverage under the ACA, citing religious beliefs. Since for-profit companies can't currently use this exemption, Hobby Lobby has taken their case all the way to the Supreme Court. Man, can’t a gal get her bedazzle on without trampling women’s reproductive rights?

Leading Ladies
Gotta love the sisterhood: New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan reflects on Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s inclusive leadership, which helped Hassan jumpstart her political career.

Grimes Does Pay
Oh, Senator Mitch McConnell. It was real cute of you to try and fool us into thinking you support equal pay, even though we all know you voted twice against the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Yeah, just keep trying to get on Alison Lundergan Grimes’ level.

Virginia Is For Lovers
Well, it’s for those who love male politicians, apparently: The state wins the title for being the worst in the nation at electing women to office. So who’s ready to fill out one of She Should Run’s “Ask a Woman to Run” forms?

Ready for Round Two?
And three, four, and five? Although the defeat of the 20-week abortion ban in Albuquerque felt great, we gotta stay vigilant. New fights over state-level abortion restrictions are already underway, and you might just be living in the next big battleground.

Extreme Makeover: GOP Edition
Sick and tired of hearing anti-choice GOP bros spew misinformation on the reg? So are these savvy women strategists – including a pro-choice Republican woman! – who aim to change the face of the GOP. May I suggest you start by electing more GOP gals?

He Was A Boy, She Was A Girl
...and she made all of her reproductive health decisions for herself. Knowing that Avril Lavigne is on this list of pro-choice pop stars from the ‘00s makes me feel just a liiiittle bit better about still knowing all the words to “Sk8er Boi.”

We’re So Full...Of Love For Y’all
I know you were all really busy stuffing your faces with mashed potatoes last weekend, but I hope you made time to read this list of 10 women to be thankful for! (And then made your own list and shared it with all the cool women in your life and had the best Thanksgiving ever.)

  • ★ 50/50 Representation

Why should good government depend on only half of the nation’s human capital? WCF commits to 50/50 representation of women and men in elected office by 2028.

  • ★ Common Ground

Common ground just means problems get solved more collaboratively, for the good of more people. It’s the bedrock of our leadership at home and abroad.

  • ★ Viability for Election

It takes more than money to make a candidate worth electing. WCF looks for guts, street sense, situational awareness, resilience -- the full range of gifts a woman brings to the race.

  • ★ Non-Partisan

A woman’s place is in every party, every elected office, at every level. Period.
