BRIEF: Don't Mess With Katniss

Weekly Brief: October 15, 2014
Brought to you by Women's Campaign Fund

Run Like a Girl
Want more women in office and a chance to win $100? She Should Run’s Thunderclap is making it easy for you to use your voice and get some money in return. Make sure to support our movement and ask a woman to run today!

Granddaughter Gap
WCF-endorsed candidate Lenda Sherrell (TN-04) really wants to improve the Paycheck Fairness Act if she’s elected to Congress. For one thing, she does not want to explain to her granddaughters why the pay gap even exists—and I don’t blame her. It’s very hard to comprehend at any age.

Intolerance for All
Georgia pundit Phil Kent recently called Senate candidate Michelle Nunn a "female airhead," and refused to apologize. Surprised? Well, he’s also the leader of an anti-immigration hate-group—so acceptance isn’t really his thing.

Aziz’s Answer
Aziz Ansari is a feminist and bets you are too. Last week, the comedian went on Letterman saying you’re a feminist if you don't think Beyoncé should make 23% less than Jay Z. His litmus test for feminism might just be the most effective one yet...

Minority Report
Women and minorities are ruining Nickelodeon… according to this angry man. The author of SLIMED! An Oral History of Nickelodeon's Golden Age, says Nickelodeon is too obsessed with diversity. Yes, please take us back to this so-called golden age of “are they racist?” television shows (I’m looking at you, Doug Funnie).

The Ghost Ceiling
Director Paul Feig confirmed that the third Ghostbusters movie will feature an all-women ghost busting team. This is so exciting—even though no one knows which women it will be. Who ya gonna cast, Ghostbusters?

She is Malala
Malala Yousafzai recently became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner ever. At 11 years old, she began advocating for education and has since become an international symbol for peace. I can’t believe I’m saying this ‘cause she’s only 17…but it’s about time she won.

Cower for Katniss
Last week, Jennifer Lawrence spoke out about her stolen private photos saying anyone who looked at the pictures should “cower in shame.” Yes, they should all live in fear ‘cause it is a sex crime… and you just don’t mess with Katniss freakin’ Everdeen.

Big Bad Blog
Looks matter in politics… at least they do when you’re sexist like State Rep. Steve Vaillancourt (NH). This week, he posted a blog saying Congresswoman (and WCF woman-in-office) Ann Kuster will lose her election because she’s “ugly as sin.” Steve…I’m happy to announce that the only loser here is you.

  • ★ 50/50 Representation

Why should good government depend on only half of the nation’s human capital? WCF commits to 50/50 representation of women and men in elected office by 2028.

  • ★ Common Ground

Common ground just means problems get solved more collaboratively, for the good of more people. It’s the bedrock of our leadership at home and abroad.

  • ★ Viability for Election

It takes more than money to make a candidate worth electing. WCF looks for guts, street sense, situational awareness, resilience -- the full range of gifts a woman brings to the race.

  • ★ Non-Partisan

A woman’s place is in every party, every elected office, at every level. Period.
