For women early in their career

For those who are just beginning their careers, there are many ways to get involved and serve. Many positions are part-time and volunteer and bring together members of the community who are passionate about a particular issue. Members of state and local boards and commissions have varying backgrounds, levels of experience, and skill sets and they all make meaningful contributions. It’s never too soon to serve!

Three Tips for Getting Started:

  1. Network: Now is the time to start using and building your connections. Reach out to your college or graduate school alumni associations, local women’s civic groups, trade organizations, and young Democrats/Republicans network to expand your circle.
  2. Lead:Start demonstrating your leadership potential today – spearhead a fundraising effort for an organization you’re passionate about, lead your local environmental or civic rights activist chapter or organize your precinct’s get out the vote effort.
  3. Start Now: Even if you want to make a full-time career of appointed service, you should explore part-time or volunteer roles that will allow you to test the waters with minimal risk, build your resume for greater service, and build you network within “the system.” This will ensure you are well-positioned for full-time roles later on.
