Janet Cowell
State Treasurer, North Carolina

Treasurer Janet Cowell is running for reelection in North Carolina. She is the first woman to be elected to the position and as Treasuer oversees more than $70 billion in pension fund investments for the 850,000 teachers, firefighters, and public employees of North Carolina. North Carolina is ranked as the 5th-best funded pension in the country. Prior to holding elected office, Cowell worked as a financial analyst for HSBC Bank and Lehman Brothers and consulted for various Fortune 500 companies. She was elected to Raleigh City Council in 2001 and the North Carolina State Senate in 2004 before being elected Treasurer in 2008.
