Barbara BoxerSenator Barbara Boxer is running for re-election in California after 3 terms in the Senate. Boxer is known as a forceful advocate for women, families, children, consumers, and the environment. Boxer came to the Senate after 10 years in the House of Representatives. A leading defender of a woman’s right to choose, Senator Boxer helped lead the floor fight for passage of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. She continues to lead efforts to stop extremists in Congress from chipping away from women’s right to make their own reproductive health choices. Senator Boxer is the first woman to Chair the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW) and she additionally chairs the Senate Select Committee on Ethics, making her the only sitting Senator to hold two Committee Chairmanships. A champion of public education, Senator Boxer wrote landmark legislation establishing the first-ever federal funding for afterschool programs. Her law now covers 1.4 million children. Patty MurraySenator Patty Murray is running for re-election in Washington State for her 4th term in the Senate. Senator Murray has distinguished herself for her leadership on education, children’s issues, transportation, border and port security, healthcare, economic development and veteran's issues. She is the first woman to represent Washington in the Senate, and she came to Capitol Hill with experience in the Washington State Senate, PTA, and school board. Senator Murray serves as the chair of the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations subcommittee. As a leader for women, she has spearheaded efforts to close the pay gap, protect women in retirement, increase access to child care, and increase access to emergency contraception. Kirsten GillibrandSenator Kirsten Gillibrand is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate from the state of New York. Appointed in January 2009 to fill the vacated Senate seat of Hillary Rodham Clinton, Gillibrand faces a potentially tough re-election campaign in 2010. She has already contributed to the expansion of health insurance to more Americans, helped millions of uninsured children get access to affordable health care, stood with President Obama to move forward on an aggressive economic recovery plan, helped create jobs in New York and made sure New Yorkers get their fair share. Shelley BerkleyRep. Shelley Berkley is running for re-election to Congress from Nevada’s first district. She has represented the first district since 1999, and she has been a resident of Las Vegas for more than four decades. Berkley was the first person in her family to attend college, and this has forged her commitment to improving educational opportunities for all. Berkley came to Congress with experience in the Nevada State Legislature, and on the Board of Regents for the Nevada State University system. Berkley is currently a member of the House Committees on Ways and Means, and Foreign Affairs. Her legislative priorities include creating job growth, extending affordable health care, and introducing legislation to improve the methods by which nuclear waste is eliminated. Donna EdwardsRep. Donna Edwards is running for re-election to Congress from Maryland's 4th district. Edwards serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Science and Technology Committee. Prior to running for office, Edwards advocated for women and founder of the National Network to End Domestic Violence and she led the fight to pass VAWA (The Violence Against Women Act). Her priorities include campaign finance reform, protecting Social Security, supporting "living wage" efforts, and protecting international human rights. Diana DeGetteRep. Diana DeGette is running for re-election in Colorado’s first district after serving seven terms in Congress. DeGette is a member of the House Democratic leadership as Chief Deputy Whip, she is Vice-Chair of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, and she played an important role in the recent Health Care Reform bill as a vocal advocate for women’s health. DeGette was the chief architect of twice-vetoed legislation to expand stem-cell research, and has written a book on the subject entitled, “Sex, Science, and Stem Cells: Inside the Right Wing Assault on Reason.” A lifelong Coloradan, DeGette is committed to continuing the fight for improved healthcare, protecting small businesses, and conserving Colorado’s natural treasures through environmental protection. Marcia FudgeRep. Marcia L. Fudge is the incumbent running for U.S. Congress in Ohio’s 11th district. Fudge is a committed public servant who brings a hard-working, problem-solving spirit of determination to Congress. These qualities will help her with the task of creating jobs, attacking predatory lending, and improving health care, small business, and education. These characteristics were honed as Warrensville Heights’ first African American female Mayor.  As the city’s top executive, Fudge led Warrensville Heights in building 200 new homes and shoring up a sagging retail base. With appointments to House Committees and Caucus seats, Fudge put her strong work ethic to practice – it is no surprise that she is one of the only freshmen members of Congress appointed to serve as Vice Chair of a Subcommittee. Debbie HalvorsonRep. Debbie Halvorson is running for re-election to U.S. Congress from Illinois' 11th District. Halvorson came to Congress in 2008 as an experienced legislator who had served as the first female State Senate Majority Leader in Illinois. Halvorson serves on three House Committees: Agriculture, Veterans' Affairs, and Small Business. She is a lifelong resident of the 11th district, which includes suburbs south of Chicago, and parts of rural central Illinois. Her legislative portfolio includes drafting legislation to protect senior citizens checking into nursing homes and working to expand health care coverage to veterans, small businesses, the self-employed, and other uninsured groups. Mary Jo KilroyRep. Mary Jo Kilroy is running for re-election to Congress from Ohio's 15th district. She was elected in 2008 and serves on the House Committee on Financial Services and the House Committee on Homeland Security. Kilroy came to Congress with 28 years of experience serving at the local and county level, including a term as President of the Franklin County Board of Commissioners from 2005-2007. Continuing to expand and improve health care services in the 15th district is one of her highest legislative priorities. Ann Kirkpatrick Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick is running for re-election to Congress from Arizona's 1st district. She was elected in 2008 after two terms serving in the Arizona legislature, and a highly successful career as a City and County level criminal prosecutor. In Congress Kirkpatrick has focused on legislation to jumpstart the economy, create jobs, help veterans, and fight the illegal drug trade. Nita Lowey Rep. Nita Lowey is running for re-election to Congress from New York's 18th district, which includes parts of Westchester and Rockland Counties. Lowey has held this seat since 1989. Lowey is currently the Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, and a member of the Select Committee on Homeland Security. Prior to her election to Congress, Lowey served as the Assistant Secretary of State for New York. She has distinguished herself as an advocate for women and children by obtaining record federal support for battered women's shelters, passing the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act, and increasing federal funding for after-school education. Carolyn MaloneyRep. Carolyn Maloney is running for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives from New York’s 14th District, which encompasses East Manhattan and parts of Queens. Maloney has represented the 14th district since 1992. She is the first woman Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, and her legislative priorities in Congress have included encouraging economic stability, fighting for women’s rights, and serving the best interests of her diverse New York City constituency. Doris MatsuiRep. Doris Matsui is running for re-election to U.S. Congress from California's 5th district, in the Sacramento area. Matsui was elected in 2005 to succeed her husband, the late Congressman Bob Matsui. Matsui is a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and she came to Congress with experience as a senior aide in the Clinton administration, and as a key member of the 1992 Presidential Transition Board. Gwen MooreRep. Gwen Moore is seeking re-election to Congress from Wisconsin's 4th district, a seat she has held since 2005. Moore currently serves on the House Committee on Financial Services and the House Budget Committee. She was elected in 2009 as Vice Chair of the Congressional Women's Caucus by her female colleagues. Moore is a strong advocate for measures that focus on improving economic and educational opportunities in low-income communities. Prior to serving in Congress, Moore served in the Wisconsin State Senate and the Wisconsion State Assembly from 1989-2003. Chellie PingreeRep. Chellie Pingree is running for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Maine’s 1st District. Pingree serves on the House Armed Services and Rules committees, and she is the first woman ever to hold her seat. Prior to her election in 2008, Pingree was a Maine State Senator from 1992-2000, including four years as Maine Senate Majority Leader, until she was term-limited out of office. From 2003-2007 Chellie served as the National President and CEO of Common Cause, a national non-partisan citizen activist group. Pingree's legslative priorities have included environmental protection, prescription drug reform, and supporting small business. Her eldest daughter Hannah is the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. Loretta SanchezRep. Loretta Sanchez is running for re-election to Congress from California’s forty-seventh district. She has served in this seat since 1996, and she is the first and only Hispanic woman to be elected to Congress from Orange County. Sanchez is Vice-Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, and a leading voice on national security. She also sits on the House Armed Services Committee, where she has made it a priority to address and prevent sexual assault and discrimination in the military. Sanchez was born and raised in her district, and came to Congress after a career as a financial professional serving public agencies, municipalities, and private firms. Jan SchakowskyRep. Jan Schakowsky is running for her seventh term in Congress serving Illinois’ 9th district. She previously served for eight years in the Illinois State Assembly. She is a member of the House Democratic Leadership as Chief Deputy Whip, and she serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee, and the House Select Committee on Intelligence. Schakowsky has been an outspoken advocate for women in Congress, sponsoring legislation to protect immigrant women from violence, and provide transitional housing for women and children victims of domestic abuse.  Allyson SchwartzRep. Allyson Schwartz is seeking re-election to U.S. Congress from Pennsylvania's 13th district for her fourth term. The 13th district encompasses Northeat Philadelphia and parts of Montgomery County. Prior to serving in Congress, Schwartz was a PA State Senator for 14 years. She is a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, and the Budget Committee. A former healthcare executive, Schwartz is know as a healthcare policy expert. Carol Shea-PorterRep. Carol Shea-Porter is running for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives from New Hampshire’s 1st District. Shea-Porter is the first woman ever elected to national office from her state. Shea Porter was first elected in 2006, and she is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the Committee on Education and Labor. As a former military spouse, she has made verteran's health and services a special legislative focus. Dina TitusRep. Dina Titus is running for re-election to U.S. House of Representatives from Nevada's 3rd district. Prior to her election to Congress in 2008, Titus served in the Nevada State Senate for twenty years, serving as the Democratic Minority Leader from 1993-2008. Titus serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, as well as the Education and Labor Committee and the Homeland Security Committee. Her mission continues to be serving and protecting Nevada families, with a focus on children, seniors, and the disabled. Niki TsongasRep. Niki Tsongas is seeking a third term in U.S. Congress from Massachusett's 5th district. Tsongas is the first woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts in the past 25 years. Her committee assignments include the House Armed Services Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Natural Resources Committee. Her service on these committees gives a good picture of her varied legislative priorities. She has made communication with her constituents a priority, and she reguarly holds "Congress on Your Corner" events at local supermarkets across the 5th district. Prior to be being elected to Congress, Tsongas started Lowell, MA's first all-female law practice, and served as Dean of External Affairs for Middlesex Community College. Learn more about Rep. Sue Errington State Senator Sue Errington is running for re-election to the Indiana State Senate, District 26. A dedicated community leader, State Senator Sue Errington has spent much of her life working to bring people together to get things done. Errington has a long record of public service on local boards and commissions and with local, state, and national organizations advancing women’s rights and good government. First elected to the Indiana Senate in November of 2006, Errington currently serves as the ranking Democrat on the Senate's Health and Provider Services Committee and is also a leading proponent of green jobs and renewable energy development.  Prior to her election, Errington taught Spanish and later served 17 years as the Public Policy Director for Planned Parenthood of Indiana. Marian HarrisRep. Marian Harris is running for re-election to the Ohio Statehouse from the 19th district. Harris has lived in the 19th district for 35 years, and was elected as state representative in 2008.  She has been a political advocate active in campaigns for 30 years. Kay Hatcher Rep. Kay Hatcher is a republican running for re-election to the Illinois Statehouse from the 50th district. Harris came to the statehouse with experience as a school board member, Kendall County Forest Preserve President, and State President of the Illinois Federation of Republican Women. Stacey NewmanRep. Stacey Newman is running for re-election to the Missouri House of Representatives. A longtime advocate for women and children, Newman was elected in a special election in November 2009. Newman has been involved in electing Democratic women to office as the former women’s vote director for the Missouri Democratic Party/ the DNC. Most recently she helped found and was the executive director of Harriett’s List, a statewide PAC dedicated to increasing the numbers of progressive women in the state legislature and statewide office.
