Game Changer: Nina Turner



Nina comes from a military family and was born the oldest of seven children to teenage parents. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, she took her first job at the age of 14 to help her mother provide for her six younger siblings. Despite the hardships, she was the first college graduate in her family. Nina always knew she wanted to be a bridge for those less fortunate and decided to embark upon a career in public service.


Secretary of State – Ohio (Statewide) – Challenger. Nina is challenging the incumbent Republican Secretary of State, Jon Husted.


In 2006, Nina was elected to be the first woman to represent Ward 1 on the Cleveland City Council.

In 2008, she was appointed to the vacant 25th Ohio Senate seat, and two years later she was elected to continue serving the 25th Senate District after becoming widely-respected by the hardworking women and men of northeast Ohio as their voice in Columbus.

Nina is currently the Ohio State Senate Minority Whip, the Ranking Member on the Insurance & Financial Institutions Committee and the Finance Subcommittee on Education.

Nina is a member of the Ohio Ballot Board and has been a strong advocate for voting rights.

Nina has been a fierce champion of women’s issue and the Women’s Campaign Fund in the Ohio Senate and across the country.
